Westport Library Committee backs two extra Saturday closings, weighs new children's aide
Library · Meeting of March 9, 2026
Westport Library Committee approves two Saturday holiday closings and advances a proposal for a new part-time children's services aide. The committee voted unanimously at its March 9 meeting to close the library on the Saturdays following Good Friday and Juneteenth, both days when the library is already closed by contract the preceding Friday. The library director presented a proposal for a Library II-grade aide position at five to ten hours per week, estimated at between $4,500 and $9,600 annually, funded from existing state library aid.
The director cited the library's "very, very busy" children's section, which she currently manages alone alongside her directorial duties, including a Tuesday morning play group and two Wednesday story times. The next step requires outreach to the town administrator and a presentation to the personnel committee; no date was set.
